As your Student Union, we want to help you out when you need it the most. That's why we offer complementary legal advice for Sheridan students. Our legal advice covers everything from family law, immigration, criminal law, to real estate and business.
Our lawyer, Bill Reid, can provide you with confidential advice and guidance with most legal issues. Bill has been a practising lawyer for over 30 years and holds both a law degree and an MBA. Bill specializes in helping students with their legal inquiries, including:
· Landlord/ Tenant disputes
· Family Law and Custody Issues
· Employment Law
· Criminal Law
· Immigration
· Intellectual Property Rights
· And more
Bill is also able to help with creating, notarizing or commissioning legal documents.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT:
Have your One Card handy / Student ID with you to book and/ attend your appointment.
This appointment will be for legal advice. Our lawyer will not be able to attend court with a student.
If you are signing a document related to common-law/spousal matters, please ensure your partner is there to attend the online appointment (they too must have/show their ID).
If you are getting a document notarized, please ensure you send the document to Bill.
Bill & Order Information Sessions:
As part of our Legal Advice service, our resident lawyer, Bill Reid hosted an information session to help students learn more about Criminal Law. During this session, we dive into everything from criminal record checks, criminal charges, federal offenses, careers in criminal law and everything in between. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what Legal Advice we can offer through the SSU! IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING…
An affidavit is a document that contains information you believe to be true and becomes legal when you sign it in the presence of a legal authority known as a notary or a commissioner of oaths.
Bill can also assist you with completing your letter of invitation should you be inviting family members to visit you while you study or for your graduation. To ensure you have all the information you need for your appointment, CLICK HERE.
A notary is a person qualified to take oaths or to certify that photocopies are true copies of original documents.
