5 Steps To File Your Academic Appeal
Need to file an academic appeal?
by: Catarina Pham
As your VP of Academics, I want to share five critical steps that may help you feel less overwhelmed and make your appeal process run much smoother.
1. Visit the “Appeal Assistance” page on the SSU website for important information on Academic Appeal
It might be a good idea to start off your Appeal process by visiting the Appeal Assistance page. You may find many helpful resources from there, ranging from specific deadline for two types of appeals, Academic Advisement contact information, Academic Appeals and Consideration Policy & Procedure, and most importantly, the Level 1 Appeal Form.
2. Talk to your professor
I think most students usually skip this step, but it’s actually very helpful. Communicating with your professor individually and letting them know your current situation are not time-wasting as you think, instead, they may be able to figure out the solution for your issues. Don’t forget that your professor is the person who monitors your grade and know your academic performance most throughout the whole course.
3. Schedule a 1-1 meeting with your Academic Advisor
The second person you should talk to before filing an appeal is your Academic Advisor. Based on your current situation, they may be able to answer your questions, provide you with appeal advice or figure out if there is an alternative solution for that. You can go Academic Advisement page to book a 1-1 appointment with them.
If you have any difficulty in figuring out your Academic Advisor, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at nguyenphuongkhanh.pham@sheridancollege.ca, I can totally help you out!
4. File an appeal
Now, you are all set to file an appeal. Please download the Level 1 Appeal form from the Appeal Assistance page, complete it, and have it sent to academicappeals@sheridancollege.ca.
It’s also very important to have all your supporting documents prepared and attached to your appeal form.
5. Be Patient!
Last but not least, be patient! An appeal usually takes up to 3 weeks to be processed, so if you have submitted a form for a couple of days and haven’t got any response, it’s totally normal. If it is already 3 weeks and there is no update on your appeal, please feel free to reach out to me, I may be able to support you.
“2 Golden Days” for Academic Breach
In terms of appealing to Academic Integrity Breach, once you receive an email from the Academic Integrity department noticing your breach, you will have 2 days to fill out the form which is attached to that email and send it back to them to appeal that decision. If you pass those 2 days, you have to go through the whole process of Academic Appeal as normal.
I really hope the 5 steps above can help you navigate the appeal process, but if you still have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at nguyenphuongkhanh.pham@sheridancollege.ca.
Good luck, Bruins! You got this!
